All Jennings County Schools will be open on all regularly scheduled days unless, closed by an emergency. When the schools are confronted with an emergency such as extreme conditions of snow, ice, fog, or mechanical failure which necessitates the closing, early dismissal, or delaying school, an announcement will be given to the local area radio/school website/television stations prior to 6:00 a.m. After 6:00 a.m., the radio/television stations will repeat at regular intervals the school closing message. If no report is heard for Jennings County Schools, it can be assumed that school is in session on the regular schedule. Please do not call the school. Telephone lines need to be kept open for emergencies. In the event of other types of emergency, the Jennings County Schools’ Crisis Response Plan will be invoked. As you know, state law mandates that we hold school a certain number of days. Any days missed must be made up. The ultimate decision as to whether a child is sent to school is that of the parent. But all attendance guidelines will apply.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is currently maintaining a website at www.in.gov/ai/appfiles/dhs-countyMap/dhsCountyMap.html that provides us with a regularly updated “County Travel Status” map, by county, that indicates by color-coding the travel status of each county within the state. By providing us with this information it provides us with an effective means for determining whether travel within our county is safe. The breakdown of categories is as follows:
WHITE: CAUTION-A CONDITION MAY DEVELOP THAT LIMITS OR HINDERS TRAVEL IN ISOLATED AREAS. NO TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS HAVE BEEN PLACED IN EFFECT BY COUNTY OFFICIALS, BUT CITIZENS SHOULD BE ALERT TO CHANGING CONDITIONS.
YELLOW: ADVISORY-ROUTINE TRAVEL OR ACTIVITIES MAY BE RESTRICTED IN AREAS BECAUSE OF HAZARDOUS SITUATION. CITIZENS SHOULD USE CAUTION OR AVOID THESE AREAS. SCHOOLS AND BUSINESSES MAY BEGIN TO IMPLEMENT THEIR EMERGENCY ACTION PLANS.
ORANGE: WATCH-CONDITIONS ARE THREATENING TO THE SAFETY OF THE PUBLIC. ONLY ESSENTIAL TRAVEL IS RECOMMENDED (I.E. TO AND FROM WORK, EMERGENCY SITUATIONS, ETC.) EMERGENCY ACTION PLANS HAVE BEEN OR SHOULD NOW BE IMPLEMENTED BY BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS.
RED: WARNING-TRAVEL MAY BE RESTRICTED TO EMERGENCY PERSONNEL ONLY. CITIZENS ARE DIRECTED TO REFRAIN FROM ALL TRAVEL, COMPLY WITH NECESSARY EMERGENCY MEASURES, COOPERATE WITH PUBLIC OFFICIALS AND DISASTER SERVICES FORCES IN EXECUTING EMERGENCY OPERATIONS PLANS, AND COMPLY WITH THE DIRECTIONS OF PROPERLY IDENTIFIED OFFICERS. FURTHER AND MORE SPECIFIC RESTRICTIONS MAY BE INCLUDED IN THE DISASTER DECLARATION.
This site incorporates information from a variety of sources and condenses it into a format that provides us with a tool for gauging whether or not travel is safe. In our discussion we would like to suggest that we use this system as a "yardstick" to determine if events, games, practices, or other extra-curricular activities should be held. If at any time Jennings County is labeled orange or red that signifies that ALL activities, events, and mandatory practices at our schools shall be cancelled. The Jennings County High School may hold voluntary practies (under the orange level) with approval of the principal and the superintendent (or designee). Students unable to attend an optional practice will not be penalized in any fashion. No one is to have any activities during a red level; all buildings must be closed.
It will provide us with an instantaneous means for gauging conditions without any discussion regarding human judgment. This site provides us with a standard maintained by Homeland Security that can be referenced in the event of questionable conditions.
Attendance at activities and events that are to be held at other schools may also be determined by accessing this site. We can then ascertain the conditions at those locations and whether our students can access our school for transportation and if sending our students to other school sites is safe and appropriate.
We would appreciate your input and consideration of using this as our primary tool for determining whether access to schools for event, practices, and activities shall be allowed.
