Kindergarten Skill Expectations for the Third Grading Period
Listed below are skills that students will be introduced to in the third grading period of kindergarten. If your child is unable to perform any of these tasks we recommend that you work on these areas at home. If you would like suggestions on how to help your child in any of these areas please contact your child’s teacher. LANGUAGE ARTS • Identify & understand meanings of Quotation marks (“ “) JCSC • Identify & understand meaning of an Exclamation point(!) JCSC • Read & point to the text for an exact match between the numbers of words spoken and the number of printed words mCLASS Reading Assessment • Retell familiar stories 2.4,2.5,3.3 • Read and write 50 high-frequency words: • Distinguish fantasy from reality 3.1 • Tell an experience or creative story in a logical sequence. 7.5 • Draws pictures and writes words for a specific reason (such as a list or labeling a picture.) 5.1 • Writes phonetically spelled words using an understanding of the sounds of the alphabet and knowledge of letter names 4.4, 6.2 MATH • Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 20. 1.5 • Count, recognize, write number, name and order a number of objects up to 75 1.6 • Record and answer questions about a graph 1.6 • Identify, copy and make simple patterns with numbers and shapes – abba pattern or aabbaabb pattern 2.2 • Make direct comparisons of the length and weight of objects and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler or holds more 3.3 • By the end of April the mCLASS Math Assessment requires students to count to 83 in one minute • Writes using pictures, letters and words (such a word wall words or words seen around the room.) 4.3 Home – School Connection: Dear Parents: Listed below are the designated skills that kindergarten students need to *master during the third grading period so that they can successfully progress to the fourth grading period of the school year. You and your child can practice these skills at home, while you are driving in the car, or while you are waiting for an appointment. Please remember that students are assessed on fluency as well as knowledge. Students are expected to identify letters, numbers and frequency words within a 3-5 second window on the Indiana 3D Reading & Math Assessments. (*Master: Your child does this without help or prompting from the parent/teacher.) Top Skills for Third Nine Weeks *Read & point to the text for an exact match between the number of words spoken and the number of printed words. mCLASS Reading Assessment *Listen to one- syllable words and identify the ending sound. IAS 1/11 *Retell a familiar story in a logical sequence. IAS 3.2 *Write phonetically spelled words that can be read by the student and staff. IAS 4.4 *Read 50 high-frequency words. *Count to 75 by 1s. 3D Math Assessment *When given a series of 3 numbers, name the missing number. (3,__,5 or __, 8,9 or __,2,__) *When given 2 numbers between 0-2- name the bigger number (or smaller number) upon request. mCLASS Math Assessment *By the end of April kindergarten students are required to count to 85 in one minute on the 3D Math assessment.
