![]() Kindergarten Skill Expectations for First Grading Period
Listed below are skills that students will be introduced to in the first grading period of kindergarten. If your child is unable to perform any of these tasks we recommend that you work on these areas at home. If you would like suggestions on how to help your child in any of these areas please contact your child’s teacher. Language Arts • Identify the front cover of a book 1.1 • Demonstrate tracking words from the page top to bottom and left to right, using the return sweep. (Student may not actually read but can point to the words in proper order.) 1.2 • Demonstrate reading a book from the first page to the last page. 1.2 • Be able to locate the beginning and the end of the sentence. 1.4 • Locate the title of the book. (always in big letters) 1.1 • Locate the author’s name. 1.1 • Identify and understand that a period marks the end of a sentence. 1.21 • Read and write 10 frequency words. 1.15 • Say rhyming words in response to an oral prompt. 1.10 • Identify the syllables or number of syllables in a word. 1.13 • Match beginning sounds to pictures. mClass Reading Assessment • Hold a pencil and/or crayons in an appropriate grip. • Be able to read and write his/her first name without copying or prompting. (Beginning with a capital letter and use small letters to complete name). 1.17 and 6.1 • Draw a picture to match an experience. 5.1 • Dictate a story to the teacher/assistant to write. 4.2 • Discusses ideas to include in a story. 4.1 • Attempts to write letters and words. 4.3 NUMBERS CONCEPTS • Identify numbers 0-10. 1.1 • Count groups of objects to 10. (1 to 1 correspondence) 1.1 • Write the numbers 0-10. 1.1 • Sort/classify objects according to size, color, and shape. 3.1 ● Identify geometric shapes: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval, and cube. 3.1 Home – School Connection: Dear Parents: Listed below are the designated skills that kindergarten students need to master during the first grading period so that they can successfully progress to the second grading period of the school year. You and your child can practice these skills at home, while you are driving in the car, or while you are waiting for an appointment. Please remember that students are assessed on fluency as well as knowledge. Students are expected to identify letters, numbers and frequency words within a 3-5 second window on the Indiana 3D Reading & Math Assessments. (Master: Your child does this without help or prompting from the parent/teacher.) Top Skills for First Nine Weeks *Recite the alphabet- this means saying each letter, not singing. 7.4 * Demonstrate tracking words from the page top to bottom and left to right using the return sweep. (Student may not actually read but can point to the words in the proper order.) IAS 1.2 * Read and write the letters in the student’s first name in order and in isolation without prompts. IAS 1.6 * Read 10 frequency words. IAS 1.15 *Say rhyming words in response to an oral prompt. IAS 1.10 * Count to 10 by 1’s; identify numbers 0-10 and write 0-10 in order and at random.
